Tournament matches often begin oddly, especially in early rounds. Initial points can be ragged and unpredictable, sometimes offering easy chances for winners that competitors fail to cash in due to nervousness. A need for your opponent to adjust to your serves or style can also yield some weak returns. Such opportunities can arise even against very strong opponents.
To get a good start, come to the table prepared to attack from the very first stroke. Emphasize footwork in your pre-match warmup, and be aware that nerves can affect one's movement most of all. Focus also on consistency in making all your winners, even if you need to swing a little less hard to be sure of your shots. An opponent who is shaky enough to give you some unexpected easy balls is also less likely to return your attacking shots, even if they are a little softer at first.
Finally, do expect your opponent to warm up sooner or later, especially if he is a high-level player. You will need to step up to full speed once he does. |
