When trying to push short you need as much control as possible.  Therefore you don't want any extra movement.  Step in smoothly with your right foot if you are right handed.  Stay low so you can keep your balance.  As you approach the ball, keep your elbow tucked for both the backhand and forehand.  The elbow is kept tucked because you do not want to straiten your arm, isolating it from your body and making it vulnerable to movement.  After you contact the ball, be sure to step out to be ready for the next ball.
