Coaching Corner How to Move Up a Level By Larry Hodges, USATT Certified National Coach and Member, USATT Hall of Fame What does it mean to move up a level in table tennis? I’d define two players to be on different levels if it would be a major upset if one defeated the other. Another way of looking at it would be to say that if the stronger player plays his normal level, he would win pretty much every time. Based on this, I’d say a level in table tennis ranges from about 300 points at the lower levels (under 1000 or so), to about 100 points at the higher levels (over 2500 or so). For most USATT members, a level would be about 200 rating points or so. |

Tip of the week Easy Match Pitfalls By Carl Danner While everyone likes an easy match to advance in a tournament, it can throw off your game because the pace of points may be too slow, and because winning points too easily encourages sloppy play. To avoid these problems, make a point of moving well and executing your shots quickly even against a weak early round opponent. |
